The Hotels that Help method is simple, virtually no-cost, and voluntary...but the results are impressive in terms of contributions and goodwill among staff and guests alike.

How does it work?
Hotels that Help Members generate tens of thousands of dollars in guest contributions for a local charity that you and your staff support passionately. You add a per night donation to each guest's bill (typically $1, although some hotels add more), and invite guests to contribute. Guests can opt out at any time-no questions asked-although the overwhelming majority chooses to participate, and virtually none react negatively.

Guests learn about the program through promotional materials like key folders, tent cards in rooms, posters, notices on the folio, in-room videos, conversations with the employees, and/or the easily identifiable "Hotels that Help" logo displayed prominently in the hotel.

100% of the money raised goes directly from guests-through the hotel to a local charity selected by staff and approved by management. Hotels that Help does not take any "overhead" or expenses..

How much money does each hotel raise?
Although results vary, we have found that about 75% of guests donate. For example, a 100-room hotel with a 50% annual occupancy and 75% of guests donating $1 per night raises almost $14,000 a year!

How much of the money actually goes to the charity?
100%! Hotels that Help never touches the money; you collect and distribute 100% of donations directly to your charity partner.

What does this program cost?
Very little-most Hotels that Help Members run it with minimal additional expenses beyond informational materials. (Hotels that Help provides templates for materials, and also has a relationship with a low-cost printer who can deliver finished materials. There is a low Hotels that Help Membership fee that provides that offers benefits like the use of the "Hotels that Help" logo and certification of your program, and supports the Hotels that Help movement.

What kinds of charities do Hotels that Help Members support?
Hotels that Help believes strongly in supporting local "safety net" charities that help kids, homeless people, families in need, etc. When a community's most vulnerable are well-taken-care-of, neighborhoods are more inviting and visitor-friendly. An industry that provides shelter and hospitality is a natural partner for groups that shelter and serve those in need.

However, Hotels that Help Members are free to choose a cause that matters most to their staff! However, the charities have three things in common:
  • small and local
  • serve the community well
  • the hotel staff believes in their good work
